Head of a man with emaciated features

Head of a man with emaciated features
This small head in black stone from the end of the Ptolemaic Period or the beginning of the Roman Empire provides an excellent example of a style of art which is basically Egyptian but which exhibits a number of Hellenistic influences, such as the short locks of hair held in place by a diadem. The face is emaciated, and permits the bone structure to be discerned beneath the distorted skin. Note also the heavy rings under the eyes, the large almond-shaped eyes, and the strong chin.
