Mastaba (G2196) of Iasen

Scene
The Mastaba (G2196) of Iasen

Iasen in the papyrus swamp : the "seshesh uadj" scene
From the Old Kingdom, can be found five types of scenes which happen in the marshes: boating for pleasure, hunting the waterfowl, fishing with a harpoon, hunting the hippopotamus (a rare scene) and an activity named "seshesh wadj" ("pulling papyrus"), which is the one that is found here, with Iasen. It represents a much rarer representation in the tombs of individuals than those of hunting and fishing with a harpoon. It represents the combination of a character (man or woman) standing on a papyrus skiff which is floating on a band of water located in a thicket of papyrus. The undergrowth, which is extremely high and would actually surround him, forms the background of the scene.

Label of a mummy

Label of a mummy
From the Roman Period, the custom of providing mummies with a wooden label became widespread. Of rectangular form, the labels, which were tied around the neck with a string, look like small stelae. The texts, which were written in Greek or in Demotic, or sometimes in the two languages, contain brief religious formulae and personal information on the deceased. This example, which is engraved in Demotic, belongs to Tkouthis. The text also mentions the names of other members of his family, the date of his death and the name of the scribe.

This model farmyard has a high pigeon tower on one side and cattle lying down on the other. Two men are seated among the cattle.

A man wearing a wig is feeding a cow that has patches of colored hair on its hide. Pigeons are perched in the window of the tower.
