Label of a mummy
From the Roman Period, the custom of providing mummies with a wooden label became widespread. Of rectangular form, the labels, which were tied around the neck with a string, look like small stelae. The texts, which were written in Greek or in Demotic, or sometimes in the two languages, contain brief religious formulae and personal information on the deceased. This example, which is engraved in Demotic, belongs to Tkouthis. The text also mentions the names of other members of his family, the date of his death and the name of the scribe.
